A professionally crafted logo will certainly help you establish credibility as a business, and is great to have, but not every business absolutely needs one.
Do you need a logo? Read on to find out.
Solopreneurs And Freelancers
If you are a “solopreneur”, or a freelancer doing business under your own name with no intention of growing your business into a big company, then you can probably go ahead without a logo. When you are your business, so to speak, your photo often becomes a substitute for a logo. This is common among artists, photographers, writers, healers, and coaches.
However a logo can help you appear more professional and trustworthy. Having a logo is a way to show people you’re a serious business owner, and could even help you get more clients.
Small To Medium Sized Businesses
If you are doing business under a company name, have a clear idea of what kind of brand you want for your business, and you want to reach and be remembered by a large number of people, then you most likely need a logo.
People tend to expect a company to have a logo, even if it’s just a simple text based one. In fact, a lot of large companies have text based logos. Google, Amazon, eBay, PayPal, are a few that come to mind. I’m sure you can think of many more.
A logo will show people that your company is professional and trustworthy, and give them an idea of what sort of brand you are. (Though you cannot completely control your brand, only influence it. See What Is A Brand And How Do You Create One? for more info.)
If you plan on growing your company to the point of having multiple employees, stock, and millions of dollars in revenue, you definitely need a logo. (And you probably already knew that.)
Before You Get A Logo Designed
If you are not clear on the characteristics you want your brand to have then you should probably wait until you figure that out before you have a logo designed. A designer can’t create an image to reflect the personality & style of your business if you don’t know what they are yet.
Although having a logo is helpful for a business of any size, one person businesses and freelancers can get by without one if they choose to. And if you’re going to get a logo designed, you want to have some idea of what kind of brand you want your business to have.
